How this total is built
Rent is not counted twice. The everyday basket normally includes rent — roughly half of it — so this tool strips rent out of the basket before adding the housing figure. Adding them naively would overstate a total by about 60%.
VAT is already in the prices. The basket is built from purchasing-power data derived from surveyed shop prices, which include local sales tax. It is therefore never added as a separate line.
Tax assumes you become resident there and are taxed on this income locally — income tax plus employee social contributions, single filer, no deductions. Countries with a special regime (Portugal's IFICI, Spain's Beckham Law) can be much cheaper than shown; the residency tool models those.
Rows tagged est. rent sit outside the measured rent datasets and use the price basket instead.
Total = rent + everyday basket (excluding rent, so it is not counted twice) + out-of-pocket healthcare + income tax and employee social contributions on your stated income. VAT is already inside the basket prices, so it is never added. Estimates for comparison, not a quote and not tax advice. Prices updated 2026-07-11; rent from 2023 data (page rebuilt 2026-09-01); healthcare 2026-09-07; tax rules 2026-07-15.

How these prices are estimated
Each item's US baseline price (curated 2026-07-11) is scaled by the country's price level raised to a per-item elasticity: housing 1.4 (most local), services 1.1, utilities/transit 1.0, groceries 0.8, and world-priced goods like petrol, jeans or imported beer 0.4 — so rents diverge sharply across borders while tradables barely move, matching real-world behaviour (Balassa–Samuelson effect).
Price level source: World Bank — Consumption (auto-selected). Local-currency figures use market FX. Estimates for orientation — verify locally before signing a lease.
What connectivity actually costs
Measured retail prices from the ITU, not modelled from the price level. Worth showing separately because the model gets this badly wrong: it overstates home broadband by a median of 52% and mobile data by 71% across 179 countries. Telecom pricing follows spectrum auctions and competition, not the cost of everything else.
ITU ICT Price Baskets · dataset refreshed 2026-09-01. Fixed broadband is a 5GB package; mobile is data-only.
The grocery prices above are modelled from each country's overall price level. Checked against measured food prices in 153 countries, they understate food by about 30% at the median — the US, which they are priced from, is an unusually cheap place to eat well. See measured food costs.
Healthcare Costs & Exposure
What healthcare costs per person and how much of it you pay yourself. These are measured figures, not prices scaled from a cost-of-living index — healthcare is the one expense that does not track the general price level, so scaling it would overstate costs abroad by up to 5×.
Across 182 countries, out-of-pocket healthcare runs from $1 to $2,596 per person per year.

What these numbers do and don't tell you
Share and burden are different questions. The United States pays only ~11% of its health spending out of pocket — a low share — but that is still the largest absolute amount here. Thailand pays a near-identical share, and it comes to a tiny fraction of the money. Read both columns together or you will draw the opposite conclusion.
Dental is access, not price. Dentists per 10,000 people is published and real. What a crown or an implant costs is not available from any source worth citing — every comparison online comes from clinics selling the treatment they are quoting. This page will not guess.
These are national averages. They describe a country, not a person. What you personally pay depends on insurance, residency status, visa, age and which city you are in. For quality of life rather than cost, see the livability matrix .

How to read these numbers
Measured vs modelled. A measured tag means real rents published by Eurostat for that country's cities — currently Spain, Portugal and Switzerland only. HUD FMR marks the US, which uses a different statistic: HUD's Fair Market Rent is the 40th percentile rather than a median, and is gross rent including tenant-paid utilities. It is official and free where nothing else for US metros is, but it is not the same measurement, so it is tagged separately rather than folded in. Everything else is derived from this site's price basket, which scales rent by the general cost of living. Against Eurostat's housing price level that method errs both ways — up to 36% low where housing has run away from everything else (Ireland, Denmark, Czechia), about 60% high in Türkiye. Read an unmarked figure as an estimate with roughly a third of error either way.
Price-to-income compares a country with its own past, not with other countries. 127% means housing there is 27% less affordable than that country's own long-run average. Germany at 86% is cheaper than its own history. Comparing those two numbers against each other tells you nothing.
A local-wage share above 100% is not an error. In several countries the median earner genuinely cannot rent a city-centre one-bed — which is precisely the situation worth knowing about before you arrive and bid the price up further.
Mortgage rates cover the euro area only. The ECB publishes them per country; elsewhere every central bank publishes its own and there is no free global feed, so the column is blank rather than guessed.

What it costs to arrive
Not the monthly cost — the cash you hand over before you have a life there. The entry fee depends on your passport, so pick it. A deposit of 1 month's rent is assumed unless you change it; there is no global dataset of deposit norms.
What does childcare cost a family there?
OECD's model of the net cost of full-time centre-based care for two children aged two and three — fees minus childcare benefits, plus the tax and other-benefit effects — for a couple both on the average wage and for a single parent on two-thirds of it. Published cost figures, for information only; a real quote decides.

What does food actually cost there?
Measured, not modelled: the World Bank's cost of a healthy diet — the cheapest combination of locally available foods that meets a healthy-diet standard, priced from local retail prices, per person per day. Beside it, how many people cannot afford it, and how far this site's own grocery prices are from it.

How far off is our price model?
Our price model puts groceries in Thailand at 0.38× the US; measured, a healthy diet costs 0.66× — so the model understates food there by about 43%.
- Modelled and published cost figures as of the dates shown, for information only. What a household actually pays depends on its own earnings, benefits, hours and provider; check the figure against a real quote before deciding.
- The World Bank's cost of a healthy diet: the cheapest combination of locally available foods that meets a healthy-diet standard, at local retail prices, per person per day. It is what eating well costs at the lowest local prices, not what a typical or expat household spends, and a household is several people. Dollar figures use the site's FX snapshot; the scheme is priced in local currency.
- The food-group split is published for an earlier year than the cost; it is shown as shares of that year's diet, not as prices.
Our grocery prices, checked against measured ones
Every grocery price elsewhere on this site is modelled from the country's overall price level. Checked against this measured series across 153 countries, the model comes out at a median of 70% of the measured cost — it understates food by about 30% — and lands within 25% for only 36 of them. It misses most in Japan, where it understates food by 64%.
The shape of the model holds: measured food cost rises with the price level at an elasticity of 0.89, close to the 0.8 the model uses. What is off is the anchor — the United States is an unusually cheap place to eat a healthy diet, so a food price quoted against the US makes most other countries look cheaper than they are. The measured diet is a least-cost one, not what a typical household buys, so this reports the gap rather than replacing the model; the everyday-prices and total-cost figures are unchanged.

Frequently asked questions
Why not just scale healthcare costs by cost of living?
Because it would be badly wrong. Tested against real health spending, scaling by a country's price level overstates healthcare costs abroad by between 1.2× and 5.4× — Mexico's general price level is about 55% of the US, but its health spending is 10%. Healthcare does not track the general price level: the US is an outlier, and several countries deliberately price healthcare below their own economies. That is why medical tourism exists. Every figure here is measured, not modelled.
What does 'out of pocket' actually mean?
The share of a country's health spending paid directly by households rather than by government or insurance, shown both as an amount per person per year and as a percentage. Both matter: the United States pays only about 11% out of pocket — a low share — yet that is still the largest absolute amount of any country here.
Does this tell me what a crown or an implant costs?
No, and nothing on this page pretends to. No free, citable source publishes international dental or medical procedure prices — every comparison available online comes from clinics selling the treatment they are quoting, with no licence for reuse and prices that drift monthly. What is real and published is access: dentists per 10,000 people, which is what this shows.
Where does the data come from?
The World Bank (health spend per capita, out-of-pocket spend and share, government share, physicians per 1,000) and the WHO Global Health Observatory (dentists per 10,000). Both are keyless public sources, refreshed at build time — last updated 2026-09-07. Reference years differ per metric and travel with each figure.
How is this different from the livability healthcare score?
The livability matrix scores healthcare ACCESS, using WHO's UHC service coverage index — whether the care exists and reaches people. This page is about cost and financial exposure — what you pay and how much of it falls on you. A country can score well on one and badly on the other, which is precisely why they are separate.
What does the housing tab tell me that a rent listing site doesn't?
Rent measured two ways at once: as a share of your remote income and as a share of the local median wage. The gap between those is the arbitrage — the number that says whether somewhere is cheap for you specifically rather than cheap in the abstract. No listings site can compute it, because it needs a wage ladder for every country, which this site already has.
Are the rent figures real or estimated?
Both, and every row says which. Rows tagged "measured" use real rents published by Eurostat for that country's cities — Spain, Portugal and Switzerland today. Everything else is derived from this site's price basket, which scales rent by the general cost of living. Measured against Eurostat's housing price level, that method is wrong in both directions: it understates housing by up to 36% where housing has decoupled from everything else (Ireland, Denmark, Czechia) and overstates it by about 66% in Türkiye. Treat an unmarked figure as an estimate, not as a floor. Housing data last updated 2026-09-01.
Why is price-to-income shown as a percentage rather than a number of years?
Because the free, current sources publish it as an index against each country's own long-run average, not as an absolute ratio. 127% means housing there is 27% less affordable than that country's historical norm. It compares a country with its own past — comparing two countries' percentages against each other tells you nothing.
