Which countries get the most public holidays?

El Salvador leads on national holidays at 26 days; Argentina is last of the 15 shown at 16 days.

If you are moving your working life somewhere, the local calendar is part of what you are buying, and the spread is wider than most people expect — the difference between the top and bottom of this list is several working weeks a year.

Only nationwide holidays are counted. Days observed in some regions but not others are shown separately, because counting them together would make a country that publishes its regions look twice as generous as one that simply does not.

Observance days — the awareness days that appear on a calendar but are ordinary working days — are excluded entirely. Including them put one country on 49 holidays a year, on the strength of days nobody gets off.
