Frequently asked questions
- How is the quality score calculated?
- Five country-level metrics — median broadband speed, safety, healthcare, air quality, and how far English gets you — combined as a weighted mean you control with the priority sliders. Internet is normalized so 250 Mbps scores 100.
- Where does the data come from?
- Three metrics are objective, refreshed at build time (last: 2026-07-12): safety from the World Bank intentional-homicide rate, healthcare from World Bank life expectancy, and air quality from WHO PM2.5 monitoring. Median broadband speed and English usefulness stay curated (no clean free feed). The cost side uses this site's Pint & Property essentials basket.
- What does 'lives like royalty' mean?
- Your monthly budget divided by the local cost of single-person essentials: under 1× is out of budget, 1–1.5× comfortable, 1.5–2.5× very comfortable, and 2.5×+ is royalty territory.
- Why country-level instead of cities?
- Our purchasing-power cost data is country-level, and pretending otherwise would be false precision. Representative cities are shown as labels, and each score note flags where city variation is big.
- Can AI agents query the matrix?
- Yes — GET /api/livability.json with optional budget, minInternet, minSafety, maxBudget and weights params, or the rank_livability MCP tool. No key required.
For AI agents: GET /api/livability.json?minInternet=80&maxBudget=3000 — see /llms.txt and the rank_livability MCP tool.
